How to get paid on Upwork: the timeline and every fee

Of the three ways to take money off Upwork, exactly one has a published price: Direct to Local Bank, at $0.99 per withdrawal. For Payoneer, Upwork says it charges "a small per-transfer fee" and never says how much. For PayPal, it says fees "vary depending on your location" and sends you to PayPal. So the honest comparison is not three prices - it is one price against two blanks. Below is the whole path, stage by stage, with what each one actually costs.

Most guides to this answer the wrong question. They explain where to click. The thing that actually catches people out is that money you have earned is not money you can withdraw, and the gap between the two is longer than anyone expects the first time.

Here is the whole path.

Stage 1: the billing week closes

Upwork's week runs Monday 00:00 UTC to Sunday 23:59 UTC. Work you log on Tuesday does not start moving until that week ends.

Stage 2: review, then a five-day security period

After the week closes, earnings go into a review period. When review finishes, a five-day security period starts. Only after that do the earnings - Upwork's words - become "available for withdrawal", minus fees.

Add it up and the first payment on a new contract lands substantially further out than the job's end date suggests. Worth knowing before you take work you are relying on to cover something this month.

Stage 3: the Freelancer Service Fee

This is the big number, and it is not fixed at 10% however often you read that.

The fee runs 0% to 15% per contract. Upwork sets it per contract, shows it to you when you submit a proposal or receive an offer, and locks it once the contract starts. Two contracts running at the same time can carry different percentages.

One detail in your favour: if a client is refunded, Upwork refunds the service fee it took on that amount. In their words, you are not paying fees on money you did not keep.

Stage 4: getting it off the platform

Three routes. Only one has a price.

Route What Upwork charges Speed
Direct to Local Bank $0.99 per withdrawal (plus your bank's incoming fee) within four business days
Payoneer "a small per-transfer fee" - no amount published typically within 24 hours
PayPal not stated; fees "vary depending on your location" three-day hold on a newly added account

That table is the article. Upwork will tell you exactly what Direct to Local Bank costs. For the other two it describes a fee without pricing it, and points at the third party.

This is not a small omission. On Payoneer the cost that usually matters is not the transfer fee at all but the conversion, and Payoneer does not publish that markup either - the same wall from a different side, and the reason the Payoneer and Wise comparison ends where it does. If PayPal is your route, the arithmetic on a real $1,000 is the number to look at before you set it as your default.

Two Direct to Local Bank details that cost people money. There is a 12:00 UTC cutoff for same-day processing - after noon UTC it goes the next business day, which on a Friday afternoon means Monday. And Upwork notes that sending funds in your local currency may reduce or eliminate your bank's incoming fee. Note that its page prices the $0.99 transfer but does not publish a conversion rate, so if you take local currency, the exchange rate is the part you cannot check in advance. The underlying mechanism - why a local-currency arrival costs your bank less than a dollar arrival - is the same one that governs every foreign payment.

The limits nobody mentions until a withdrawal fails

Upwork's minimum is $5 USD or higher depending on your country, and there are per-withdrawal maximums that vary far more than you would guess:

Country Per-withdrawal limit Minimum
Sri Lanka $13,000
Vietnam $11,000
Bangladesh $10,000 $5
Indonesia $10,000 $5
Pakistan $8,999 $5
Kenya $5,000 - $20,000
Brazil $3,000 $12
Nigeria $3,000
Argentina $3,000

Nigeria and Brazil at $3,000 against Sri Lanka at $13,000 is a four-fold spread on the same platform. If you are having a good month in Lagos, that is several withdrawals, several $0.99 charges, and several incoming-fee events at your bank rather than one.

Argentina carries something else. Upwork's page notes that Argentinian authorities may withhold income tax on incoming remittances, including an ARBA gross-income withholding at rates it states as 0.20% to 3.5%. That is a tax matter rather than an Upwork fee, but it lands on the same money.

Countries not on that list simply have no country-specific limit stated on the page. Absence there means "no special limit published", not "unsupported" - do not read it the other way.

The cost before you earn anything

Proposals cost money. Connects are $0.15 each, the number required varies per job and can change while the post is live, and you can bid extra Connects to boost a proposal.

There is one trap in how they are bought. Upwork will use your earnings balance first, but it cannot split a payment - if your balance does not cover the full purchase, it charges your billing method for the entire amount. That is why a verified billing method is required even when you intend to pay from earnings.

For anyone tracking what a month actually costs, Connects belong in the total. Thirty proposals at an average of 12 Connects is $54 spent before a single contract exists.

What this means in practice

Take a $1,000 contract at a 10% service fee, withdrawn to a local bank. Upwork takes $100. The transfer costs $0.99. Your bank may take an incoming fee. And the money is available to withdraw roughly a week and a half after the billing week closes, not on the day the client approves.

The withdrawal fee is the part everyone optimises and the smallest part of the bill. The service fee is fifteen to a hundred times larger and it is visible before you bid - which makes reading it on each offer the highest-value habit on this whole list.

And if Upwork's own routes do not work where you live - if PayPal has no presence in your country and the local-bank route is not offered - that is a different problem with its own answer: what to do when PayPal is not available where you are.

Where I would not use this

  • This is the freelancer side only. If you hire on Upwork, the fees and the timeline are different ones and nothing here applies to you.
  • Do not treat the country limits as a fee. They are per-withdrawal ceilings. A $3,000 limit in Nigeria does not cost you anything - it means a $7,000 month comes out in more than one withdrawal.
  • Do not plan around the service fee being 10%. Upwork sets it per contract anywhere from 0% to 15%, and it is shown to you before you bid. Read the number on the actual offer, not a percentage you remember from a forum.
  • Withdrawal cost is the small half of this. On $1,000 at a 10% service fee you lose $100 to the fee and $0.99 to the bank transfer. Optimising the $0.99 while ignoring which contracts carry which fee is the wrong end of the problem.

Common questions

How long does it take to get paid on Upwork?

The billing week runs Monday 00:00 UTC to Sunday 23:59 UTC. After it closes your earnings go through a review period, then a five-day security period, and only then are they available to withdraw. The withdrawal itself is on top of that: Direct to Local Bank should arrive within four business days, and Upwork says Payoneer transfers typically arrive within 24 hours.

What is the cheapest way to withdraw from Upwork?

Direct to Local Bank is the only route with a published Upwork price, at $0.99 per withdrawal plus whatever your own bank charges to receive. Upwork does not publish an amount for its Payoneer transfer fee and does not publish PayPal's fees at all, so no one outside Upwork can rank all three on price using the numbers Upwork provides.

How much does Upwork take from freelancers?

The Freelancer Service Fee is 0% to 15% per contract as of 22 January 2026. It is set per contract, shown before you submit a proposal or accept an offer, and locked once the contract starts. If a client is refunded, Upwork refunds the service fee it charged on that amount.

Is there a minimum I have to withdraw?

Yes. Upwork's minimum for Direct to Local Bank is $5 USD or higher depending on your country - Brazil's minimum is $12 and Barbados' is $101. There are per-withdrawal maximums too, and they differ sharply by country: Vietnam $11,000, Pakistan $8,999, Nigeria $3,000.

Why does buying Connects need a billing method if I already have earnings?

Because Upwork cannot split the payment. It says it will use your earnings balance first, but if that balance does not cover the whole purchase it charges your billing method for the entire amount - so a verified billing method is required either way.
